Note from Frank to Grace

Dear Grace,

Thank you again for taking in that parcel. Fourth one this month, I think.

I don't know what I'd do without a neighbour like you.

I've left a few tomatoes outside your door by way of thanks. Nothing fancy, but they're good ones this year.

Frank

Another one for you Frank! I've got it here.
You're an angel. I'll pop round later if that's alright.
Of course. Kettle's always on.
21 MARCH 2024
Haven't seen you in a few days, everything alright?
Just a rough week. Nice of you to notice.
Come round for tea if you fancy it. I do a decent pot of tea if nothing else.
I might take you up on that.

18 JUNE 2024
I hope I didn't upset you asking about Margaret earlier.
You didn't.
I just realised afterwards it might have been a bit personal.
It's alright. I don't mind talking about her.
You said she was ill for a long time?
Cancer.
I'm sorry.
Long time ago now.
Were you together a long time?
Yes many years.
She was the person I thought I'd grow old with.
I'm sorry, Frank.
Don't be.

Handwritten note - Grace on Frank's parcels

Another parcel for Frank.

It's sitting on my kitchen table.

This one is heavier than usual.

I actually picked it up and tried to work out what was inside.

For a second I thought about opening it.

I wouldn't, obviously.

But I realised how strange this has become.

Why are all his parcels coming to me?

Deliveries for Flat 12, Aldergate House
Grace Whitfield[PLACEHOLDER]
Hi, I'm hoping you can clear something up. I live at Flat 18 and keep being asked to accept parcels for my neighbour at Flat 12. They are always marked as being left with a neighbour because the recipient was unavailable. The strange thing is that Frank is usually home. It has happened enough times now that I wondered whether there is some kind of delivery instruction attached to his address. I'm also not his nearest neighbour. There are several flats closer to his than mine. I'm not complaining. I just want to understand why the drivers are always directed to me rather than another neighbour. Thanks, Grace Whitfield
Customer Services[PLACEHOLDER]
Dear Ms Whitfield, Thank you for contacting us. There is a standing instruction on the account for Flat 12, Aldergate House. If there is no answer, deliveries are to be left with the occupant of: FLAT 18, ALDERGATE HOUSE The instruction was added on 6 February 2024. For security reasons, we are unable to confirm who added the instruction. The account holder can change or remove the instruction through their delivery settings. Kind regards, Customer Services

Text exchange - Grace and Frank about delivery instruction, July 2024

Frank
4 JULY 2024
Can I ask you something a bit strange?
Of course.
Did you tell the parcel company to leave your deliveries with me?
I don't think so.
Apparently there's a permanent instruction on your account. Flat 18 specifically.
That's odd.
It was set in February.
I wouldn't know how to do that.
You definitely didn't choose my flat?
No. My nephew helped me with all that online stuff. I wouldn't know how to change anything.
Right.
Why? Has something happened?
No. It's probably nothing. Sorry, I didn't mean to make it weird.
I will try and contact them.
Who?
The delivery company.
Oh don't worry. It sounds like a bother.

Handwritten note - Grace on the photograph and obituary

The photograph is definitely her.

Frank has the same photograph of Margaret in his flat.

He told me she died of cancer.

That part was true.

But the obituary says she was married to someone called Peter Ellison.

Frank isn't mentioned anywhere.

He told me Margaret was the person he thought he'd grow old with.

I searched Frank's name with Aldergate House.

I found something from 2018.

News report - Aldergate House stalking conviction, May 2018

The Aldergate Gazette
17 May 2018 · Local News · Edition 4,212

Aldergate House resident convicted of stalking neighbour

A resident of Aldergate House has been convicted of stalking after a court heard that he manipulated the building management system to interfere repeatedly with the daily life of a woman living in the same block.

Frank Keating, 64, targeted Margaret Ellison over a period of several months.

Prosecutors said the behaviour was difficult to identify at first because each incident appeared minor and could easily be explained as a technical fault.

At different times, the lift failed to stop at Margaret's floor, her entry fob stopped working for short periods, visitors were unable to reach her through the intercom and maintenance appointments were moved without her knowledge.

The court also heard that her laundry bookings were repeatedly changed, parcel collection codes occasionally failed and the communal lighting outside her flat would sometimes go out shortly before she returned home.

On several occasions the lift opened on the wrong floor late at night.

None of the incidents was serious on its own.

But over time Margaret began changing her routine around them.

She stopped returning home late. She became reluctant to use parts of the building alone. Friends visited less often after repeated problems gaining access.

Frank increasingly offered to help.

He let her into the building when her entry fob failed, dealt with maintenance staff on her behalf and began accompanying her through the building when she felt unsafe.

Margaret later told police that Frank seemed to appear whenever something went wrong.

Investigators discovered that Frank Keating had volunteered as a resident representative during a Verdant technology trial at Aldergate House. As part of the trial, he had been given elevated access to a building-management test account.

The system was administered by Verdant Solutions Ltd.

The prosecution said Keating had manipulated the building management system to create small, repeated disruptions around Margaret's routine and then recorded how she responded to them.

Recovered account data showed system changes linked to Margaret's flat followed by short internal notes recording what happened next.

Some were marked simply:

RESPONSE RECORDED

The court heard that on several occasions Margaret sought Frank's help shortly after one of the changes was made.

Keating denied making the alterations.

He was convicted of stalking involving serious alarm or distress and made subject to a restraining order prohibiting contact with Margaret Ellison.
